The village of Iitate has consistently ranked
as one of Japan’s most beautiful communities over recent years (www.utsukushii-mura.jp/). Situated in
a verdant area of Fukushima that has long boasted a history of agriculture and
beef farming.
Sadly, the village is also located approximately 39 kilometres northwest of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. This is slightly outside of the 30 kilometre radiation exclusion zone around the plant, but the village was evacuated in April 2011 on the advice of the authorities. Most families have relocated to other parts of Fukushima, and are living in temporary accommodation, with the children attending new schools.
