We stopped
for lunch at William’s Wool Shed. What a great place!
First, we
ate a massive sausage roll with tomato ketchup – very yummy! We ate ALL of it.
Then
Laurence gave us a tour of his museum and we learned about sheep shearing. A
good shearer can shear up to 200 sheep though a pretty bad one can only shear
80 in a day. Laurence owns 5,000 sheep, which is more than the population of our village. We learned that there are sheep you eat and sheep that you rear
for wool. We also discovered that wool makes great underwear – absorbs sweat
when hot or keeps you warm in the cold – and some wool products absorb sweaty
smells.
Fact: At a peak, there were 180 million sheep in
Australia. That was in 1969.
(Today
there are far fewer, probably more like 120 million.)
We enjoyed
the shops after the museum. Some of us bought giant lollipops and some of us
enjoyed looking at sheep products … and some of us enjoyed a very funny monkey
sound book!!
